Wire harness tape is an adhesive tape used to bundle, protect, and insulate electrical wire harnesses in automotive, appliance, and industrial equipment. Common types include PVC harness tape, PET fleece tape, acetate cloth tape, and cotton cloth tape. Selection depends on temperature rating, noise reduction requirements, abrasion resistance, and OEM specifications.
Introduction
Wire harness tape is an essential component in every vehicle, appliance, and piece of industrial equipment that contains electrical wiring. It bundles individual wires into organized harnesses, protects them from abrasion and heat, provides electrical insulation, and reduces noise caused by wire vibration against vehicle panels and chassis components.
For automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers, selecting the correct wire harness tape is a specification-driven decision. The wrong tape can lead to harness failures, warranty claims, noise complaints, and safety issues. This guide covers the key tape types, their properties, and how to select the right one for your specific application.
Types of Wire Harness Tape

| Tape Type | Material | Temp Range | Noise Reduction | Best Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PVC Harness Tape | PVC film, rubber adhesive | -10 to 80 °C | Low | General wire bundling, colour coding |
| PET Fleece Tape | PET non-woven fleece | Up to 105 °C | Excellent | Automotive NVH-critical areas |
| Acetate Cloth Tape | Acetate cloth, rubber adhesive | Up to 105 °C | Good | Harness wrapping, coil insulation |
| Cotton Cloth Tape | Woven cotton, rubber adhesive | Up to 90 °C | Good | Wire bundling, abrasion protection |
| Polyester Fleece Tape | PET fleece, acrylic adhesive | Up to 150 °C | Excellent | High-temp engine bay harnesses |
| Polyimide Tape | Polyimide film, silicone adhesive | Up to 260 °C | None | Sensor wiring, exhaust area |

PVC Wire Harness Tape
PVC tape is the most basic and cost-effective wire harness tape. It uses a PVC film backing with rubber-based adhesive. PVC harness tape is used for general wire bundling, colour coding, and light protection. It is not recommended for high-temperature areas or applications requiring noise reduction.
PVC tape is available in multiple colours for wire identification and routing. Standard widths are 19mm and 25mm. It provides adequate electrical insulation for low-voltage automotive wiring.
PET Fleece Tape
PET fleece tape is the most widely specified wire harness tape in modern automotive manufacturing. The non-woven PET fleece backing absorbs vibration and prevents wire-to-panel contact noise. This makes it essential for harness routing through passenger cabin areas where NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) performance is critical.
PET fleece tape conforms well to wire bundles and provides excellent abrasion protection. It is hand-tearable, which speeds up manual harness assembly. Temperature ratings range from 105 to 150 degrees Celsius depending on the adhesive system.
Acetate Cloth Tape
Acetate cloth tape uses a woven acetate fabric backing that provides flexibility and conformability. It wraps smoothly around wire bundles and irregular shapes without wrinkling. Acetate tape is commonly used in motor winding and transformer insulation as well as wire harness wrapping.
Cotton Cloth Tape
Cotton cloth tape is a traditional harness wrapping material that provides good abrasion protection and moderate noise dampening. It is easy to tear by hand and conforms well to wire bundles. Cotton tape is used where moderate temperature resistance and cost-effectiveness are priorities.
How to Select Wire Harness Tape
Temperature Zone Mapping
Automotive wire harnesses are routed through zones with very different temperature exposures. Engine bay harnesses near the exhaust manifold may see temperatures above 200 degrees Celsius. Passenger cabin harnesses operate at 80 to 105 degrees Celsius. Map your harness routing to identify the temperature zones, then select tape rated for each zone.
NVH Requirements
Modern vehicles have strict noise targets. Wire harnesses routed through the firewall, A-pillar, and door cavities must not generate rattling or buzzing noise. PET fleece tape is the standard choice for NVH-sensitive routing because its soft texture prevents wire-to-panel contact noise.
Abrasion Protection
Harnesses routed through sheet metal edges, grommets, and panel holes are subject to abrasion from vibration. Cloth-backed tapes like PET fleece and cotton cloth provide better abrasion resistance than PVC film tapes. For severe abrasion zones, a corrugated loom tube with tape overwrap provides maximum protection.
OEM Specification Compliance
Automotive OEMs publish specifications for wire harness materials that define temperature class, flame retardancy, adhesion values, and chemical resistance. Common standards include LV 312 (VW), GMW 16700 (GM), and Ford WSS-M99P30. Ensure your tape selection meets the applicable OEM specification for the target vehicle platform.
Wire Harness Tape Application Zones

| Vehicle Zone | Temperature | NVH Need | Recommended Tape |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine bay (near exhaust) | 150–260 °C | Low | Polyimide or high-temp polyester fleece |
| Engine bay (general) | 105–150 °C | Low | PET fleece or polyester fleece tape |
| Firewall passthrough | 80–105 °C | High | PET fleece tape |
| A-pillar / headliner | 60–90 °C | High | PET fleece tape |
| Door cavity | 60–80 °C | High | PET fleece or cotton cloth tape |
| Trunk / boot | 40–70 °C | Medium | PVC or cotton cloth tape |
| Underbody | 80–120 °C | Low | PET fleece with abrasion-resistant overwrap |
