Surface preparation for adhesive tape bonding involves cleaning the substrate with isopropyl alcohol (IPA) or a suitable solvent, removing all dust, oil, and moisture, and allowing the surface to dry completely before tape application. For low-energy surfaces like polyethylene or powder-coated metals, a surface primer may be required. Proper surface preparation can improve tape bond strength by 50 to 200 percent compared to unprepared surfaces.
Adhesive tape is faster to apply, requires no curing time, creates no mess, and provides consistent bond thickness. Liquid adhesive offers higher shear strength, fills large gaps, and creates permanent structural bonds. Use tape when speed, cleanliness, and repositionability matter. Use liquid adhesive when maximum strength, gap filling, and permanent bonding are required.
